For example, the opening sequence to the movie SE7EN (1995) shows the prperations the killer is going to make which unfolds for later in the film. Enigma codes are employed here so as to confuse the audience and question what this means. What really makes this opening sequence is the credits that come up on to the screen with the screeching score and mini montage composed of various close ups and extreme close ups, often of trivial things but with the other elemnts included helps to make even turning a page seem tense.
Another example of opening sequences being effective for their movies is this from The Dark Knight (2009). This displays enigma codes of the masked people for the audience, all of which display characteristics of being the leader of their group and all take eachother down one by one. Until the antagonist is finally revealed at the end.
This lets the plot unfold from here showing the sadistic and insane traits of this character. Being this powerful helps to set the film up as one of the best of all time.
Finally, Casino Royale (2006) has a very powerful and well constructed opening sequence. This begins with the film being shot in black and white which allows for a very effective use of shadows, highlighting the theme of espionage/thriller. A very soft score is implemented but other than that there is silence apart from diegetic dialogue used by the main characters in the scene, the protagonist and the antagonist. Once the scene is over a use of opening credits through a song and introduction the the themes of the film i.e. playing cards to foreshadow the poker game evident in the main plot. This is also a use to highlight the expectations of the thriller opening sequence to keep the viewer guessing with this use of enigmas.
This lets the plot unfold from here showing the sadistic and insane traits of this character. Being this powerful helps to set the film up as one of the best of all time.
